COCKATOO ISLAND
This island at the junction of the Parramatta and Lane Cove rivers is home to a prison built by prisoners.
Cockatoo Island, the largest island in Sydney Harbour, is a 10-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay. From 1839 to 1869, it was used as a penitentiary to relieve overcrowding on Norfolk Island, then as a place of work and correction for girls until 1888. Then, from 1857 to 1992, the island became Sydney's largest shipyard. Take your time to explore this island like no other, and don't miss the mini-museum on the hill, which revisits its naval history. Catering available on site.
