Old port of Ormos offering grilled fish for lunch at the ouzerie Anthonis.

At the bottom of the red cliffs, the ancient port of Ormos (or Gialos) is an attraction in itself. Rather nice to meet with the fishermen who gather for lunch around grilled fish at the Anthonis ouzerie, behind the small church at the end of the pier. It is also the obligatory passage point for the 80,000 passengers of the huge cruise ships that disembark here every year. But the real highlight of the show is the climb. There are four options for this: going there by bus, on foot, by cable car or by donkey (which we don't recommend).

Passez votre chemin : 450 marches pour atteindre un port qui n'a plus rien de pittoresque. ...et de pauvres mules qui remontent une flopée de touristes sous un soleil de plomb

Nothing extraordinary avoid taking the cable car when tourists return to their boat, waiting is endless. Apart from the view on the caldera, there is not much else to see. Sensitive heart, refrain from taking the trail, the smell is not really pleasant and look where you walk.
Magnificent views over the caldera. Beware slippery floor, avoid flip-flops. We are stayed on foot and to go up on the back of donkeys. For the walk in October 2010, it requested us 5€ for donkeys and 4€ for the cable cars.
