Work of art by Giogos Zangolopoulos, the most photographed monument of Thessaloniki.
Beautifully lit at night, the umbrellas have become Thessaloniki's most photographed monument, day and night, dethroning the nearby White Tower and the imposing statue of Alexander the Great. Abandoned to their poetry, tourists and locals play and twirl with art. Inaugurated in 1997 - the year Thessaloniki was designated "European Capital of Culture" - this 13 m-high installation of 40 stainless steel umbrellas and poles was designed by Athenian artist Giorgos Zangolopoulos.
