Museum of pottery and figurines from the tombs of Marathon.
The ticket includes a visit to the burial mound, the protohelladic cemetery (3000-2300 BC) located in Tsepi (2.5 km from the Marathon Museum) and the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods located in Nea Makri. Just before arriving at the Marathon Museum, we pass in front of the mound of the Plataeans, the allies of the Athenians during the battle of 490 BC. Still before the museum, a small dirt road, in very poor condition, leads through the fields to a small church with a splendid view of the Gulf. A little further to the left, near a stream, is the so-called Pan cave. The museum itself is interesting.
In the courtyard are exposed stelae and bas-reliefs; in the entrance hall you can see a very beautiful bronze helmet from the Battle of Marathon.
In room A are gathered the pottery found in the cave of Pan and photos of the site.
Room B houses other pottery and figurines from the Marathon tombs, including a geometric period amphora. This period is characterized by the filling of the empty space of the pottery with geometric figures and lines.
In room C, dedicated to the battle, is the trophy built by the Athenians after the victory, but of which only the base remains.
In Room D, burial stelae of Athenians who died in battle are found.
Finally, in Room E, we can see a statue from an Egyptian temple, perhaps the one of Isis discovered nearby, as well as the tomb and skeleton of a child from the Roman period.
