In the center of the city, in three historical buildings, THE CITY MUSEUM OF VARAŽDIN presents its permanent exhibitions through the selection of the best and most precious works . The Gothic and Renaissance style fortress, Stari grad / Old Town is the place where you can see a part of the past and the way of life through the centuries. If you are in Varaždin, this is a destination not to be missed.
The fascinating life of insects is presented in the classicist Herzer Palace. Perhaps the most fascinating are the biographical details of prof. Košćec who was the first to group and describe insects.
The most famous names of Croatian fine arts and works of old European masters from the gallery's collection are exhibited in the Baroque Sermage Palace; the frames alternate and sometimes instead of these paintings a thematic exhibition is organized. When you are in Varaždin, check the program. We have been waiting for you since 1925, when the museum was opened.

The permanent exhibition, Cultural and Historical Section
The appearance of the fortress, built and reconstructed from the 14th to the 19th century, is a museum of architecture with 1000 pieces of art. There are objects of fine and applied arts in the museum, which are grouped into rooms that represent different periods: Baroque, Renaissance, Rococo, Classicism, Empire, Biedermeier, Historicism, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The collections of guilds, ice, ceramics, watches, portraits, weapons, stone monuments, fashion and clothes are witnesses of the rich life of the inhabitants. Inside the fortress is located the St. Lawrence Chapel with a sacristy.

The permanent exhibition, Natural Section, 'The World of Insects'
They live in the forest, on the edge of the forest, in the meadows, in the water and on the coast, some are active during the day, others at night, there are some that never leave their underground hiding places. Insects are undoubtedly the most interesting creatures and as most of them are very small, professor Franjo Košćec has made enlarged models to see them and understand their nature better.
A special part of the exhibition, 'Touch and get to know', is intended for blind and visually impaired people. Find out why this museum was awarded the annual Croatian prize 'Simply the Best!
