Starting from the old quarter of Tophane or the Red Tower along the sea walls, you arrive at the shipyard built by the Seljuk, the first on the shores of the Mediterranean (the Turks had another one in the Black Sea at Sinop). It was founded by Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad in 1228, two years after the construction of the Red Tower. Oriented to take maximum advantage of daylight, its 57 m façade is intersected by 5 vaulted arches.
