The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally advises against visiting this area when printing this guide. Located to the west of the Nile Valley, this small, rugged oasis has nothing in common with the city of lights. In fact, its Arabic name is pronounced "barisse", like our capital, and most road signs indicate it by its familiar spelling: Paris. It's one of the last slightly authentic villages in the area. Apart from its painted houses and the architectural complex of the unfortunate Hassan Fathy, abandoned like many of his other creations, the oasis is of no major interest.
