The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally advises against printing this guide. The smallest of the desert oases is probably also the most lost. Most travellers don't go beyond Bahareyya, and only the initiated push on to Farafra. Farafra, named Ta'iht or Land of the Cow in ancient Egypt, is a simple village. The oasis stretches across a plateau of white sand, speckled with patches of greenery in which tiny villages hide. From the main village (Qasr el-Farafra), a network of sandy paths criss-cross the oasis, through palm groves and lush orchards.
