Hotel located on a small cliff opposite Mnemba, offering rooms with balcony or terrace, garden or sea view.

This beautiful hotel is located on a small tree-lined cliff to the north of Matemwe, almost opposite Mnemba Island. A sumptuous infinity pool at water's edge. Rooms are in wooden bungalows, with sea-view balconies or garden-view terraces. Some are family rooms, all decorated in Swahili style. The restaurant is delicious. A pool at the back is reserved for beginner divers from the Dive Point club, run by Simon, a very friendly Frenchman. Shuttle service to Sunshine Bay, the sister property with a small beach.

Owner's Message

All rooms have a balcony or terrace with ocean views. They also include a safe and are decorated in the Zanzibar style. Each room has a private bathroom with shower.

Sunshine Marine Lodge also offers exclusive access to a private beach area on Muyuni Beach. This private beach features a restaurant, beach bar, umbrellas and sun loungers.

A wooden jetty leads to the beach at low tide and to the sea at high tide. You can relax in a hammock or by one of the pools. Dive Point Zanzibar also organizes scuba diving and snorkeling sessions.

Enjoy local and international cuisine at the restaurant and drinks at the Boat Bar. The lodge also has several lounge areas and provides free Wi-Fi throughout the building.

Sunshine Marine Lodge is 55 km from Stone Town and 60 km from Zanzibar International Airport. It also lies opposite Mnemba Island, a 20-minute drive from Matemwe.

A really nice, small beachfront hotel with staff that are extremely friendly. Perfect as a base for going out swimming, local tours and sightseeing trips. You can snorkel straight from the beach at medium or high tide, but the best snorkeling is at Mnemba atol (we went with Kinchangajaku Tours situated in the adjacent village who were brilliant). We went in August, and the temperature was perfect the whole way through.

The room was spacious and comfortable, but practically open to the outside. The few nights we stayed here, there happened to be a storm with very strong winds, and since the doors were basically blinds, and the windows had no glass (just a cutout filled with an insect mesh). It was very noisy and cold at night due to this. Above the doors to balcony, it was all open with insect mesh too. Literally open to the outside. So you couldn't close your doors and windows in such conditions even if you wanted to. During the day when it was hot, the lack of air conditioning in the room made it difficult to rest.

What makes up for this was the service. Absolutely amazing staff, who are all friendly and welcoming. A special thank you to Kilosay, the hotel manager. He went out of his way to welcome us with complementary massages and coconuts!

The quiet, private beach was also very nice to relax in. Far away from the tourist traps.

Overall pretty decent, could be improved with real doors and air conditioning.

We loved the atmosphere around this small hotel. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. The food was very fresh and tasty, considering we are in Africa (we have had much worse in other places). Coffee is instant everywhere in Tanzania, so that was a bit of a bummer. In terms of location there is absolutely nothing close by, if you want crowded beaches you should not stay here, go to Nungwi or Kendwa or any of those other tourist traps where you will be harassed any time by people selling stuff or offering other services ????
We loved the three small pools here to refresh ourselves and went looking for shells on the private beach. There is a bus going to the beach about every hour if you want to go somewhere else and you can hire a driver to take you to the turtle pool, the prison island, the herb gardens and everything else on the island. If you want to go diving, a driver will pick you up to take you to Divepoint at the Sunshine Marine Lodge.
So if you're looking for a quiet place to relax after your safaris or whatever, this is definitely the place to go.... Really worth it! I would go right back!
