In winter, when the weather permits, i.e. when it is very cold, it is possible to reach the island by car by driving on the ice. This is a rare and unique experience.

When arriving in Hiiumaa, you can hitchhike, a practice that works relatively well and allows you to reach the main cities. Two buses per day from Tallinn to Kärdla. The journey takes 5 hours. Count about 14 € for a one-way ticket including the ferry crossing. Buses from Tallinn, via Haapsalu, connect the island to the mainland.
