Basilica built on a hilltop according to a Roman plan, housing a funerary monument depicting Saint Augustine.

Built in 1881 on the site of a temple dedicated to Baal Hammon, a god worshipped by the Numidians, the Basilica of Saint Augustine dominates the top of a hill. Its construction follows a Romanesque plan in a neo-Byzantine style. The ceilings are made of painted wood. The apse of the basilica houses a funerary monument representing Saint Augustine on his deathbed. The altar is a 300 year old Berber chest. Behind the basilica, where mass is celebrated on Friday and Sunday mornings, a hospice run by the Little Sisters of the Poor welcomes the elderly.

de Numidie à Rome
un édifice intact, très bien restauré et entretenu. un lieu où l'algérien Saint Augustin fût évèque et qui conserve encore son cubitus bien sauvegardé.
localisation géographique stratégique et qui domine le site antique d'Hippone. A visiter absolument

BASILIQUE SAINT - AUGUSTIN : c'est vrai :
- qu'elle est sur une colline
- qu'elle était bien "antérieure" à ce que l'on voit
MAIS j'ai quand même été déçue , en allant la voir ( avec une amie Algérienne , donc qui connaissait le "quartier ! ! ! )
- de la "faune" qui était près de là
- de la nouvelle "construction" , qui ne mentionne pas trop les origines
BREF , j'ai été déçue : essayez , vous , sait-on jamais ? !
