SAINTE-MARIE CATHEDRAL AND CLAVERIE STONE CENTRE

The cathedral of Sainte-Marie houses the remains of Bishop Pierre Claverie who was assassinated there on August^1, 1996 during the black decade. Near his tomb, you can see the photo of Mohamed Bouchikhi, a Muslim friend who was murdered with him as he was bringing him back from the airport; he lies in the cemetery of Sidi Bel Abbès. The current bishop, Jean-Paul Vesco, will be able to tell you more about the life of Pierre Claverie if he is available when you visit.
