It is the oldest Taiwanese temple dedicated to Confucius since it was built in 1665 by Koxinga's son. At the same time, it was the first public school in Taiwan, because even now temples dedicated to the wise have a pedagogical function. Renovated about twenty times, it is an example of classical Chinese architecture. Its peaceful gardens serve as training grounds for Tai-chi enthusiasts. On September 28th, to celebrate the master's birthday, the biggest event of the whole island takes place in the temple.
