Once used to transport wood, these old red locomotives have been carrying tourists between the towns of Chiayi and Alishan at an altitude of 2,274 m since 1984. The winding road climbs steeply and it takes 3.5 hours of travel time during which the train crosses 77 bridges, 53 tunnels, banana plantations and mountain landscapes. Be careful, the Alishan railway line is sometimes cut if the weather conditions are bad.

Superb views, unfortunately more in service currently (2011) because of the last typhoon and earthquakes.
