During the Second World War, the Japanese forcibly recruited more than 1,000 soldiers, mostly British, as prisoners to work in the gold mines. The treatment was inhumanly cruel. If they did not bring back gold after their hard day's work, they were deprived of meals. Needless to say, many did not survive such treatment. Some were secretly fed by Taiwanese miners who took pity on them.
