MONUMENTO A GÜEMES
Huge 25-metre-high bronze statue atop a mound of rock, paying tribute to the famous general Martín Miguel Güemes
Located at the foot of Cerro Bernardo and at the end of Paseo Güemes, a huge bronze statue pays tribute to the famous general Martín Miguel Güemes, gaucho hero of Salta province. He fell from his horse after being shot here, and died a few days later at Glen Horqueta, 37 km from Salta. The monument was inaugurated on February 20, 1931. Located 25 m above sea level, it stands atop a mound of rock from the Cerro Bernardo. The reliefs on the base represent the gauchos ' resistance to the Spanish crown.
