This site, recognized as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, is shaped by mountains, lakes, rivers, lagoons, volcanoes... There are some very high peaks, such as the Cerro las Tórtolas (6,323 m) and the Cerro del Toro where the mummy that can be admired in the museum of La Laja comes from. Vicuñas and guanacos were abundant here in those days. After a short period of copper and lead mining, the area was abandoned in favour of hunters, who decimated the animal population. Thus, it was decided to create this reserve in 1980 to protect the guanacos and vicuñas. Today the park is home to the largest concentration of vicuñas in the country.
