The capital of the province of the same name was founded in 1562 and, like Mendoza, it was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1944 (which caused more than 10,000 deaths) and was therefore almost completely rebuilt. Since that time, it seems to be standing still (during a last earthquake in 1977, nothing has changed)! The town is not very charming, but you can console yourself by tasting the wines of the region and visit the birthplace of Sarmiento, former President of the Republic. For the record, it was in San Juan, in 1944, that Perón and Evita met for the first time
