AVENIDA DE MAYO
A beautiful avenue in the city, designated a Lugar Histórico Nacional in 1997, bordered on one side by the Cabildo and on the other by City Hall
Much narrower than the impressive Avenida 9 de Julio, which it crosses, the Avenida de Mayo is in a way the "Champs-Elysées of Buenos Aires", the city's most beautiful avenue. Inaugurated in July 1894, this avenue in the Monserrat district has been classified as a Lugar Histórico Nacional since 1997, prohibiting any alteration of the facades, advertising or construction that might compromise its architectural heritage. It is often compared to Parisian avenues, with its Haussmann, neoclassical and Art Nouveau buildings. Lined with Parisian-inspired buildings and dotted with cafés, theaters and associations founded by Spanish immigrants, it is more akin to Madrid's Gran Vía, one of the Iberian capital's longest avenues. Connecting the famous Plaza de Mayo to the Plaza del Congreso over a distance of almost 1.5 kilometers, it is the link between the seat of executive power (the Casa Rosada) and the legislative power (the Palacio del Congreso de la Nación Argentina) of the Argentine Republic. It's hardly surprising that most demonstrations take place on this avenue! At Plaza de Mayo, the artery is bordered by the Cabildo on one side and City Hall on the other. We'll then stop off at the prestigious Café Tortoni, Argentina's most famous café, before crossing the immense Avenida 9 de Julio. We pass the lyrical Teatro Avenida, then the Palacio Barolo before arriving at the Plaza del Congreso.
