President's House was formerly known as Government House, during the time of the Dutch and then English governors, and later as King's House, and Queen's House, until 1972, when it took its present name. It was then the residence of William Gopallawa, the last Governor General of Ceylon and the first President of the Republic of Sri Lanka. The Gordon Gardens were named in memory of Governor Sir Arthur Hamilton Gordon, who created them in honour of Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1887.
