The Grand Oriental Hotel (GHO) was built in 1837 to accommodate British soldiers. It didn't become a hotel until 1875, and quickly became a great success with ship passengers and the city's population, attracted by its superb ballroom, extraordinary tableware and beautiful furnishings. Today, the palace, though in need of some embellishment, offers a superb view of the port from its panoramic restaurant on the top floor. On the first floor, don't miss the bust of Anton Chekhov.

I stayed here several nights and you really have the impression to go back in time; the phone at the reception dates back to pre-war 39-45. The rooms are decent, even if they could do with a renovation, the staff is very pleasant and the food is very good in the restaurant. It is the view of the harbour from the dining room because the port is a strategic place not open to the public.
