MITHRAEUM I ET III

During the Roman Empire, when Ptuj was an important city, soldiers from the east imported Mithraism, a Persian religion with mysterious rites. Five shrines of the god Mithra have been discovered in Ptuj. Ancient history enthusiasts and young archaeologists can discover the foundations, altars and images of the cult in the remains of Mithraeum I and III. These remains from the 2nd and 3rd centuries are especially surprising for their unexpected character in eastern Slovenia, far from the Italian Roman sites.
