The square was designed by the architect Edo Ravnikar. To the southwest of the square stands Cankarjev dom (1977-1988), a congress hall and large cultural complex with a capacity of 5,000. The Parliament (Državni zbor Republike Slovenije, 1954-1959) with its monumental portal takes you back to a bygone era. To the left of the Parliament is the Park of National Heroes and the National Museum. Slovenia's independence was proclaimed here on June 25, 1991.
