Puerto Princesa has been the capital of the island of Palawan since 1872. It is centrally located on the east coast. It has a population of 320,000. This peaceful, languid town is quite pleasant to live in, despite the throngs of tricycles that clog it up daily. A few colonial buildings remain, and you can take a stroll along the water's edge to see a row of fishermen's houses on stilts. The town has a few craft stores and a large market. It has no particularly interesting historical sites, except for its cathedral, which dominates the town and is at the heart of the festival in honor of the local patron saint on December 8. On the same day, the Tagbanuas natives of Palawan celebrate the Pagdiwata, a festival and thanksgiving expressed through rituals and offerings to the gods. Puerto Princesa is first and foremost a gateway to exploring the island. For divers, it's the starting point for Sabang and its underground river, and Tubbataha Reef Marine Park (180 km to the south-east).
