This small town of 19,000 inhabitants survives thanks to the mining industry, oriented towards zinc and coal. The Tömörtiin Ovoo Zinc mine, which has been in production since 2005, is only 13 km to the north. The town, founded in the early 1940s, was named after a river in the Sükhbataaraimag. It is also the capital, and forms the sum (or district) of Baruun-Urt, enclosed within the sum of Sükhbaatar. As such, it has its own airport with a paved runway.
