MOUNT KHIIDIIN SARIDAG

In the Khiidiin Saridag mountains are the ruins of a monastic complex of the seventeenth century. One can explore the remains of this monastery which signaled the nearby presence of Ikh Khuree (the future Urga, or Ulaanbaatar) from 1645 to 1687. This site was discovered by Russians at the beginning of the XXth century. In 1915, they organized an expedition to visit the ruins but no archaeological excavation was conducted. Since 2010, the site is the subject of regular excavation campaigns and studies conducted by a team of archaeologists.
