45 km southeast of Ulaanbaatar, Zuunmod has been the capital of Tovaimag since 1942. The city itself is not very interesting, except for its museum which, like all its counterparts in theaimag capitals, offers a quick presentation of the local geography, fauna and flora. A visit to Zuunmod is only justified by the proximity of the protected area of Bogd Khan, also a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and the remains of the Buddhist monastery of Manzushir dating from the 18th century. The latter has also recently been given a museum. These points of interest are not to be missed during a stay in Ulaanbaatar.
