MUSÉE CHINGGIS KHAAN
On the former site of the Ulaanbaatar Natural History Museum, a new building has been constructed. Recognizable by its clean lines and white dome topped by a golden eagle, it houses the new Chinggis Khaan Museum, which is scheduled to open on October 11, 2022 with 15 exhibition halls containing more than 6,000 objects and artifacts. About 5,000 of these are from 27 local organizations, including museums, libraries, archives and academic institutions from around the country. Some of the pieces are handcrafted for the occasion, and are copies of archaeological material found at Mongolian sites. Others are to be chartered from abroad, including Russia, China, Japan, Poland, Austria, the United Kingdom and Germany. Still others could be purchased directly from private collectors.
The founding of this museum is in line with the establishment of the Chinggis Khaan Institute of Culture and Heritage. Established in July 2019 by the Mongolian Ministry of Culture, this organization is responsible for conducting research and promoting the role and impact of the most famous emperor of Mongolia. It should also help develop local historical tourism. In this vein, the museum's collections are to be used to show the public the influence of Chinggis Khaan-and his successors-and to perpetuate his achievements and preserve this important part of the country's history.
