THE STREETS STARTING FROM THE GREEN SQUARE
Go there and contact
Some streets in the east of Green Square replaced, like rue Omar Moukhtar, ancient paths along which the city expanded at the end of the th century, roughly up to the height of the current place of Algeria (midan El-Jazaïr). The rue Amr ibn el-Ssa follows the course of the geographical course of the waters of a Wadi taking its source in Jebel Nefousa which was later hijacked (it now passes to the roundabout of Gargarech). This street is still called by the inhabitants Chara Wadi (street). Occupied by Turkish officials and part of the local bourgeoisie, the district occupied certain Ottoman administrations, including the municipality (near the current Baladiya street, i. e., the «town hall» in Arabic, since the current town hall is there), an important barracks and the Arts and Crafts School. There were also numerous funduk (trading inns) which disappeared in retaliation for the revolt against Italians in October 1911, the latter believing that the funduk hosted slingers.
Italian colonization had aborted the Ottoman development plans of the zone. The Italians built their administrative district around the current Green Square and the current Qasr ech-Shab'a, the former palace of the Italian Governor.
