FORTALEZA DE SÃO JOSÉ DE MACAPÁ

In the 18th century, faced with the expansionist desires of the European nations in South America, Portugal carried out a policy of building forts in all the strategic points of the colony. The fort of Sao José do Macapà is the largest Portuguese fortification in Brazil from the colonial period. Dating from the second half of the 18th century, this fortress was intended to repel foreign invasions during the Portuguese conquest of the surrounding lands.
