This small town is located 400 km west of Cáceres, in the Guaporé valley, a transition zone between the ecosystems of the Amazon basin and the Pantanal. Once the capital of the province of Mato Grosso, Vila Bela has been a forgotten village since the transfer of the capital to Cuiabá in 1820. Now, only a few architectural remains and a handful of rusty cannons remind us of its past. Today, the population, mostly black, perpetuates important folkloric traditions of African origin. During big festivities, the congo and chorado dances are magnificent reminders of the city's origins.
