At the entrance to the grotto is a rock church that attracts large numbers of worshippers and pilgrims who pray on its forecourt.

The cave of Nossa Senhora da Lapa is a real local Lourdes. This cave, a former hiding place for the Maroon slaves, and where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared, is visited by thousands of people on August 15. The church is built at the entrance of the cave and many faithful and pilgrims pray on the square of this rock church. The surroundings are then invaded by stalls of travelling merchants. The village we passed through is also an ancient quilombo.
