The most emblematic square in Rio's historic center, named after the President of Brazil and referring to the old cinemas
It is one of the most emblematic squares in the historic centre of Rio. In the 20th century, several important buildings were erected there, such as the Superior Court, the Municipal Theater, the Palácio Pedro Ernesto (Municipal Chamber of Rio de Janeiro) and the Biblioteca Nacional. If its name pays homage to the president of Brazil, Floriano Peixoto, its nickname, "Cinelândia" refers to the old cinemas that occupied it and it is also the name of the square's subway station.
