Rio's largest beach, with good surfing and kite-surfing
Barra da Tijucà is an outlying residential area of Rio. It is also, with its 18 km, the largest beach in Rio. The waters here are much cleaner than in Copacabana or Ipanema. The beginning of the beach is called Pepê, it is the trendiest and densest corner. Good surfing (and kite-surfing) spot too. Further south, the beach of Reserva, in front of the "ecological reserve" separating Barra from the Recreio district, is wilder and less populated. At the very end of Barra, the Recreio beach with its rocky promontory is very popular with families.
