Magnificent Rio Art Museum on the famous Praça Maúa, with temporary exhibitions featuring photography
The MAR, Rio's Art Museum, has become in a few years one of the must-see cultural venues in Rio de Janeiro, and even in Brazil. It is part of an ambitious programme to restore the centre of Rio and, above all, symbolises a cultural renaissance desired by the government of President Dilma Rousseff. This magnificent Rio Art Museum, the MAR, opened its doors in 2014 after several years of work. It is located on the famous Praça Mauá, in the new Porto Maravilha, the "marvelous port", with the new Museu do Amanhã. The MAR is spread over two buildings: the remarkable Palacete Dom João VI, built in an eclectic style inaugurated in 1918, but remained abandoned for decades after the port's disaffection, and the second building, a modern structure that was a bus terminal named Mariano Procopio before being transformed into a museum. Today it has a cafeteria on the ground floor, exhibition rooms, and on the last floor a restaurant with terrace. A wave-shaped structure covers the modern museum and the old building, a union between the past and the future. As such, collections from the past of Baroque Brazil coexist with exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, all well-lit along an interactive, highly informative and entertaining tour of Rio's history and culture. Numerous temporary exhibitions highlight photography. Warmly recommended.
