Ancient and prestigious museum with over 20 million exhibits, including Luzia, the oldest human fossil in Latin America
It was one of the oldest and most prestigious museums in Rio. It was ravaged by fire in September 2018. Intellectuals, students and researchers were soon outraged, denouncing drastic budget cuts in the field of culture responsible for a lack of security in the building. Opened in 1818, the museum housed more than 20 million pieces, many of which went up in smoke, including "Luzia", the oldest human fossil in Latin America discovered in Minas Gerais in 1970. It was 12,000 years old.
