Portela completes the list of GRES samba schools that you need to know in order to fully understand the culture and issues of Rio carnival. It was founded on April 11, 1923 in the Oswaldo Cruz neighborhood, north of the city. It is the oldest active samba school and the only one that has participated in all the samba school parades. It is simply the most titled school of the carnival: 22 times champion. Its "Velha Guarda", the school's old-timers, always march in a separate parade, with great elegance. Its colors are blue and white.
