Rio de Janeiro's international airport, Galeão, located on the Ilha do Governador, 20 km north of the city centre, has two terminals. You will disembark or depart from the airport, depending on the airline:

At Terminal 1: Aerolineas Argentinas, Air France, Alitalia, American Airlines, Avianca, British Airways, Continental, Delta Airlines, Gol, Iberia, Lanchile.

In Terminal 2: Pluna, Spanair, TAM, Tap, United Airlines and Varig. Arrivals and departures are on level 1.

Only domestic flights land at this airport. It is located in the bay, on land reclaimed from the sea.

Bus: Real buses serve Rio. An executive bus costs R$15 and serves Copacabana and Ipanema (the beachfront hotels) in one direction, and the Rio Novo bus station and international airport in the other.

Cab: R$20 to R$50 for the southern zone.

Tramway + metro: the tramway from Santos Dumont serves all of downtown Rio as far as Rio Novo, the bus station. At Cinelândia or Carioca, you can take the metro.

The country's main airline was created in 2010 from the merger between TAM (Brazilian airline) and LAM (Chilean airline). It serves 42 destinations in Brazil and 20 international destinations, including many South American cities. It is competitive for domestic return flights, but for a one-way trip it is better to fly with a low-cost airline. The South American company provides connections between Europe and Brazil, but there are no direct flights from or to France by this company.
