Visit the Kakamega forest to find interesting insects such as Goliath beetles, stick insects and fireflies

On arrival at the reserve, stop at the ranger office to register. As Kakamega is not officially a national park, you will not pay an entrance fee (no one will complain). To fully appreciate this forest, take one of the many hiking trails that have been laid out. They are, in principle, well signposted (although you can sometimes get lost) and allow for beautiful and interesting walks of an hour, half a day or even a whole day. Although it is not compulsory, it is strongly recommended to take a guide (rates to be negotiated before leaving). He will be able to help you discover a large number of animals that you would probably not have spotted on your own, to explain the functioning of this forest ecosystem and perhaps to avoid you going in circles for two hours. It is also possible to organize a night walk to observe the sloths during their long and laborious progress.

One of the trails leads you to Buyango Hill, the highest point of the forest, which offers a beautiful panorama. The Isiukhu Falls, located at the very north of the reserve, are quite insignificant, but give the opportunity of a beautiful walk of several hours during which you should see (and especially hear) many monkeys. The happiness of walking in a real jungle, at the foot of hundred-year-old trees on which hang magnificent wild orchids.

The Kakamega forest is a "must" for any birdwatcher and it is also the epicentre for butterfly lovers. Some of these butterflies are unique species unique to the forest. There are other interesting insects like Goliath beetles, stick insects and fireflies. Apart from monkeys, one can also see hylochers, flying squirrels, mongooses, civets, servals, genets, small antelopes such as duikers, and many species of bats.

The best time to visit the forest is probably between December and March, as it rains a little less. However, butterfly lovers will come in July and August, while flower lovers will choose the months of April to June (very wet, but great show). In any case, bring good waterproof shoes, a pair of binoculars and a parka.
