30 km from the Pacific, between Chiclayo and Tumbes, in the middle of a desert plain, the provincial capital (department of Piura) experiences high temperatures (35 °C in summer, 16 °C in winter) and little rain (from January to March). Originally populated by the Tallanes or Yungas, then by the Mochicas, the region fell under the Inca Yupanqui, forty years before the arrival of the Spaniards. Piura declared its independence on February 4, 1821 and sent a thousand of its sons to contribute to the liberation of nearby Ecuador.
