The month of October is known as "mes morado" and it is not uncommon to come across processions in all the districts of the capital.
In colonial times, a slave from Angola drew a modest moreno (dark-skinned) Christ on the walls of a convent in Pachacamilla, near Lima. The earthquake of 1746 destroyed all the surrounding walls except this one. Today, the Señor de los Milagros is protected by the Nazarenas in purple clothes (or morado) and is honored with great fervor in Lima. A reproduction of the image of this Christ is carried in the middle of a huge crowd during a procession in the historical center and in many churches. The month of October is the mes morado.
