Just south of Santa Cruz, at the end of the village of Ribeira dos Barqueiros, a path leads to the Fajã do Conde. Here lies the famous Pirate's Stone, carved by the crew of the ship Modena. On April 22, 1873, a week after casting off from Boston, its captain and crew were forced to abandon ship. They were rescued on May 5 by a ship that landed them on the first visible land: the island of Flores. The crew were kept in quarantine in the Fajã do Conde by the local population, for fear of a possible contagion of disease. The pirate's stone is a witness to their history.
