Another microclimate... Bananas, figs, grapes and araçãs grow here. This is where the first settlers landed. A path leads down the cliff to a beach of black sand, basalt pebbles and a freshwater spring, perfect for rinsing off after a swim. It is also possible to camp here. Currently uninhabited, the fajã is a popular spot for birdwatching. At Morro dos Frades, where you can enjoy a magnificent view over the fajã, stone formations have been shaped by erosion: one evokes the silhouette of a rooster, two others those of a monk and a nun..
