TOUR OF NATURAL LAKE KARIANI
Starting point: when leaving Tsingoni on the RN1 in the direction of Combani, you will see the football stadium of Hachénoua. The trail starts about 400 meters after, on the right, on a dirt track. It's hard to impose yourself when you are a freshwater lake on an island where the lagoon is king! So yes, this freshwater lake (one of the few on the island!) does not have enchanting colours, but it is home to an abundance of fauna and flora. It is the largest natural lake on Grande-Terre, but it is much smaller than the one on Petite-Terre. In the dry season, it is three times smaller than in the rainy season. Birdwatchers will be able to test their knowledge by observing the many birds that come to nest in these porous fields, some of which even live there all year round. It is the garden of egrets, herons and waders but also of endangered species such as the white crab. The lake takes its name from the moorhen, which is very present on the site and is called Kariha in Shimaore. While the botanists will be able to admire the diversity of plant species that feed on the water of the lake, lined with water lilies. However, this fauna and flora are threatened by agriculture and deforestation on the sides of the lake. A walk recommended in the rainy season, as the area shrinks considerably when the heat rises. A wooden shelter allows you to observe the wildlife in complete discretion.
