Mosque on top of Monte Mario in Rome, the largest in Europe.

The Great Mosque of Rome, the largest in Europe, was inaugurated in 1995. On the initiative of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia and with funding from 23 Muslim countries, the mosque was built on the summit of Monte Mario. The gigantic prayer hall can accommodate over 5,000 worshippers, and the vast esplanade can accommodate as many, if not more. The complex also houses the Islamic Cultural Centre, which provides Muslim associations with a bookshop, classrooms, an auditorium and an exhibition hall.
