Basilica among the seven pilgrimage basilicas that preserve a fragment of the cross of Christ.
It is one of the seven pilgrimage basilicas in Rome because it contains a fragment of Christ's cross, as well as other relics brought back by Constantine's mother during her pilgrimage to Jerusalem: thorns from the crown, a nail from the Passion and even a finger from Saint Thomas! This church is one of the oldest in Rome (you can see the original granite columns and the Constantine Baptistery), although it was heavily altered in the 12th and 18th centuries.

Beautiful fresco on the abside and of course the cross
It is nicely located in a large and sunny square close to san giovanni. It contains the relics of the cross that were given away (in minuscule parts) by the pope to the visiting king or emperors. However i really appreciated the colourful xvi century fresco of the abside attributed to pinturicchio at a certain point
The best at Rome and around
