Floats, fancy dress parades and equestrian shows enliven the streets of the city for this carnival, which dates back to the century.

Rome's Carnival, which in the 18thand 19thcenturies was one of the most grandiose in the world, has been reviving in recent years, even if it doesn't quite match that of Venice or Viareggio. Nevertheless, floats, fancy dress parades and equestrian shows liven up the city streets in a good-natured atmosphere, complete with doughnut and fried food tastings. The festivities are not confined to the town center, as each district has its own parade. A not-to-be-missed event if you're in Rome during this period.
