L’area nell’antichità (I-IV sec. d.C.) era utilizzata dai protocristiani, come cimitero; di questo possiamo vedere alcuni resti nelle vicinanze nel Parco Schuster di quello che oggi viene chiamato il Sepolcreto Ostiense.
Da molti secoli l’Abbazia è gestita dai Monaci Benedettini, fin dall’inizio, per volere dei Papi, profondamente connessa alla Basilica, con l’importante compito di custodire la tomba dell’Apostolo Paolo, e curarne la Pastorale e l’Arte Liturgica della Basilica.
All’interno dell’androne è possibile accedere e visitare ed acquistare prodotti nella Spezieria.
Visitabile dietro appuntamento il Giardino e orto-botanico interno.
