Checchino was born in 1870 on Monte Testaccio (also called Monte dei cocci), an artificial mound in Rome made of testae (cocci in Italian), fragments of broken ancient Roman pottery. In the beginning, Checchino sold only wines, salumi and other uncooked goods. The restaurant was located in the cellar, the perfect spot for storing wines due to its nearly constant and cool temperature throughout the year. Then in 1887, the family obtained its first Osteria con cucina license, and took advantage of its proximity to the slaughterhouse which opened in 1890 and remained active until 1975.

Checchino became famous for serving the quinto quarto, which means the fifth quarter, the offal of butchered animals. Until modern day, the division of meat in Rome was made in the following way: the first quarto was sold to the rich nobles, the second for the clergy, the third for the Bourgeoisie and the fourth was for the soldiers. The lowest class proletariat could afford only the entrails, the quinto quarto.

The poorest workers at the slaughterhouse, the vaccinari (ancient term for butchers), were often paid with these leftovers, which they brought to the nearest eateries to cook up. This is exactly how the traditional cuisine of Checchino was born. This poor Roman style cooking has not only had influence on restaurants in Rome but has also sparked a new trend, a renaissance of "quinto quarto" trattorie including the iconic Trippa in Milano.

The highlight among the first courses is the Testaccio specialty Rigatoni with pajata, a savory sauce made with tomatoes, lamb intestines and a sprinkling of Pecorino. If you want something less extreme, opt for the well-made Carbonara.

One of Rome’s most historic dishes, the Coda alla Vaccinara (oxtail stewed in tomato sauce with celery, pine nuts and other ingredients) was invented at Checchino. Not surprisingly, this is their best dish, which takes over 6 hours to cook on a low flame. The meat is so tender, it melts in your mouth. Also, don't miss out on the great Roman cheeses and cured meats.

The service is impeccable at Checchino, with the elegant manager Simone Mina clad in a flamboyant but elegant jacket and tie leading a group of white jacketed waiters. I was impressed with their wine serving ritual, which I've only seen a few times in Michelin-starred restaurants. In addition to a great selection wines (600!), you can choose from a wide range of grappas from Nonino to finish your meal. If you're lucky enough to experience Checchino with Farulla, you may be granted a tour of the historic cellar, including the tasting of some truly rare homemade liqueurs and amaros

But that's not all. As it turns out, Simone is a skilled bartender and happens to be the European brand ambassador for Botran rum. He has set up a bar counter upstairs to serve great rum, but also some interesting cocktails such as his long list of Martinis. Checchino is an absolute must visit not only for the food and drink, but to discover the history of the important Roman cuisine.

Locale storico, pilastro della tradizione romana. Entrando, la sala è sicuramente d’impatto: pareti e dettagli in legno sui quali sono affissi premi e riconoscimenti ottenuti durante gli oltre 130 anni di storia di ristorante. Dalla cucina: carciofo da incorniciare, rigatoni con la pajata e coda alla vaccinara signature dishes da capogiro, evitate di prendere la carbonara in un posto che ha molto di meglio da offrire. Eccezionale attenzione ai protocolli di servizio del vino, selezionato con attenzione dalla proprietà, e che è rigorosamente non della casa. Prezzo giusto, assolutamente da visitare.

Carbonara, gricia e lingua di manzo come da aspettativa,buonissime. Ottimo anche il tiramisù. Servizio cordiale e professionale.

Ristorante della tradizione, bisogna assolutamente andare da Checchino e godere della sua atmosfera senza tempo e delle sue delizie. Vini ottimi e splendidamente abbinati. Da tornare ogni volta che si viene a Roma.

Excellent overall experience: service, food and atmosphere. The atmosphere is that of a traditional white tablecloth restaurant, the heavy cutlery made a good impression. The service was impeccable, welcoming and forthcoming without trying to upsell you and shake you down at every turn. The food was quite good. I ordered the crostini with sparkling wine, carbonara, and calf tongue in green sauce (only because it reminded me of the one my grandmother used to make). I'd return in a heartbeat.

Uno dei miei ristoranti preferiti di cucina romana a Roma. Tradizione e cura del dettaglio sono di casa. Per me che sono un patito del quinto quarto e delle frattaglie Checchino è un vero paradiso. Ottime anche le paste romane e la scelta di vini. Consigliatissimo, ma da prenotare, trovare il n posto non è mai facile.

Antica ristorante che non sbaglia mai

Ce restaurant est très joli et attirant par sa décoration ancienne. Les serveurs étaient très attentionnés et le monsieur qui servait le vin parlait français. Et l’autre serveur plus âgé était aussi très gentil et attentionné.
Mais la dame à l’accueil était antipathique et désagréable, une vieille femme qui ne serait pas sourire pour un client.
Et à un moment on aurait dit que on dérangeait car on est arrivé vers 14 h et on avait pris un assortiment de toasts et je n’avais pas encore finis que un autre serveur a débarrassé la table pour vite apporter le reste alors que on avait encore les toasts en mains. Le vin n’était pas très bon non plus malheureusement. La nourriture était bien mais rien d’extraordinaire.

Loved everything about this place. The staff was super friendly and helpful. From the nice traditionnal dishes to the big wine and digestivo menu in a wonderful ambiance. Will come back everytime I'm in Rome.

Il locale è esattamente lo stesso di 40 anni fa, un po' cupo e un po' datato e lo stesso dicasi per le proposte ed il servizio..
Tuttavia, tutto è rimasto per fortuna e incredibilmente nelle mani della stessa famiglia (che lo gestisce da più di 100 anni!!!!) e la qualità dei piatti, nella loro immutabilità è ancora molto alta.???????????? Qualità e gustosità che fa passare sopra il povero impiattamento (che sicuramente può essere migliorato).
Servizio cortese e bella lista di vini e soprattutto di amari (ben 50!!).????
In sintesi: Checchino è un posto da amare ❤️‍????❤️‍???? perché è buono e perché rappresenta veramente la tradizione romana, nonostante i segni del tempo che passa...????????

Posto storico e accogliente. Personale cortese. Abbiamo mangiato molto bene, ma la mia amatriciana aveva pochissimo guanciale. Si sentiva a malapena. I prezzi nella norma per il genere di locale. Lo consiglio

Il miglior posto in assoluto dove mangiare la vera cucina tipica romana.

Siamo entrate perché volevamo mangiare ma abbiamo realizzato di avere poco tempo, avevamo ordinato solo un’acqua che abbiamo pagato all’uscita, il proprietario scortesissimo ci ha iniziato a dire che prima di entrare dobbiamo vedere il menu facendoci capire implicitamente che non ci potevano permettere il ristorante (che ha prezzi più che gradevoli).Allora abbiamo chiesto come si fosse permesso e ha iniziato ad alzare la voce e se ne è andato. Le buone maniere mancano.

Andare da Checchino vuol dire immergersi in un'altra epoca e per l'arredamento della sala, che mi ha quasi riportato indietro nel tempo, e per la tipologia di servizio offerto. Ho cenato il 14/02, previa prenotazione online e devo dire che il servizio offerto è ottimo: gentile e rapido. Menù vasto, con piatti della tradizione romana, di cui ho apprezzato i sapori autentici. Ho assaggiato carciofi e puntarelle/amatriciana e cacio e pepe. Buone le porzioni: un encomio per la amatriciana (una delle più buone mangiate). Prezzi in linea con gli altri luoghi di ristorazione.

I do love this restaurant. I had a good time with friends. The food was delightful, the service was perfect and I liked a lot the look and feel.

Un posto tipico,accogliente e in cui ti senti subito a tuo agio. Buonissima amatriciana,carciofi alla romana e polpette di pecorino! Anche i dolci squisiti. La lista vino offre un sacco di scelta a prezzi super onesti. Sicuramente nella lista dei ristoranti in cui tornare il prima possibile!

Se vuoi mangiare davvero romano qui devi andare, ho provato anche la coda alla caccinara.

Volevamo andarci come prima volta. Inserita email oggi alle 9.40, anche se e' specificato di prenotare 6 ore prima. Ma non si può rispondere alle 11.20 dicendo che e' tutto pieno pur sapendolo già alle 9.40. Da cancellare. Impatto negativo!

Rigatoni al sugo di coda, Cacio e Pepe, saltimbocca, coda alla vaccinara e abbacchio strepitosi. Peccato non essere riuscito ad assaggiare altro.

J'adore manger dans ce restaurant à Rome. L'ambiance et le goût sont toujours au rendez-vous.
