The Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve was created in 1997 to protect the marine fauna between Ponta do Clérigo and Ponta de São Jorge. However, it is still possible to go angling, snorkeling and non-motorized water sports. The most remarkable species in this marine ecosystem is the sea bass. Two islets are part of the reserve: the islet da Rocha do Navio and the islet da Rocha das Vinhas. The first was named after the sinking of a Dutch ship on Christmas Eve in 1860, when a Dutch ship was traveling from England to Haiti.
